just some tropical plants that were out behind the club.

my folks had earlier that day told me they were splitting after 33 yrs. im an only child of about 33 at the time, and that night i worked some demons out b/w the music and the booze. word has it that i went missing about half way thru the second set. no one cared. i woke up all twisted among the heliconias. got myself together walked up the back stair as the encore finished.

next night i made it home, yet managed to pass out in the back yard on a wonderfully cold slab of concrete.

glory days!

the whole Fiasco thing would have been fine, if'n a few folks from the BIRTHDAY PARTY hadnt come out the next few days with all sorts of bravado saying how they felt hurt by the whole thing.

I wish you had been there stan.

for those that have been to the BBR, you'd understand if you saw a grouping of tables which accommodated this BDAY party of about 30 people. Thats almost one third of the crowd. Had the folks been there for the music, we would have never had the fiasco. But they were there to catch up and chat.

It sent off a shitstorm into the internets and email and listservs.

I remember my wife and our party telling the Pet The Cats to 'simmer down' numerous times. I doubt Skeeter actually used simmer down. Nasty looks and Bravado is all we got back.

That was a wild ride, and hell of an interesting show.

Obviously still talked about.

I second hollis' motion that someone needs to compile all the unanswered questions. (Sunshine, at least you got like 2 right on the queen b question.)

Here goes another: (too easy for u jimbo.)

What was the original name of the band (talking Mofro...not one of JJ/Daryl's bands beforehand)?

Oh, as for what JJ stands for, I'm thinking Sunny is correct: John Jr. Is that right or is it TN_C's answer of John John??

I don't know the answer to this one. But who is "That Boy"? And or his girl? Are they fictional or based on someone JJ knew? I think Jimbo might be our best bet for an answer on this one.

Chochemea played in studio. I don't think he ever toured with the band but I believe he's sat in with them before. Man plays an awesome baritone sax.

He's the sax player on most of the songs on Amy Winehouse's grammy winning "Back to Black" album.

Isn't Rein Sanction the band that the boys use to cover one of thier songs? "On My Mind"? From what I understand, they were just friends or a another band that like Sunshine said played a few shows with the guys either opening or Mofro opening for them? I do recall JJ saying about On My Mind, that it was his favorite Southern Rock song and proof that Southern Rock was not gone or is still alive. Great song if any of you ever get to or want to hear another cover from the boys. It's on the Archive in just a few places, way back in 2003 or earlier.

I will say, most of, if not all of my knowledge comes from the archives and listening to them. I have pretty much every show backed up on an external hard drive (with the exception of a few of the newer ones just added) and have listened to all of them in full alteast once. That was all I use to do before this site came around.

yup, great thread Sunshine... Especially since it goes to prove my theory, that UHollis is officially the Man! I know he denies it, but deep down he knows, oh he knows... And to clarify, I'm talking about being the Man as in the bees knees, the cats pajamas, the wiseman when it comes to any and everything Mofro...

Skotdee, glad you brought that up, the Mag Fest recordings are great. Especially the recording with the Jax Symphony Orchestra playing with the guys. I think it's the one on the 23rd. Fireflies, Brighter Days, Lochloosa, all of the songs sound great with the orchestra twist.

There is another recording of On My Mind from the Funk Box as well, 8/17/2004.

The one skotdee is talking about the one were JJ talks about hearing that Southern Rock was gone, but to him it never went anywhere. Then, that On My Mind was the best Southern Rock song he had heard in a long time.

Sunshine.....The song "On My Mind" that DT mentioned is the link between the Gentry Brothers and Mofro to which Hollis was referring.

Clay.....Yes, Chochemea has played with them atleast once that I know of....during one of the late night shows during Langerado a few years ago (I was there). Wasn't the band called Alma Zuma before Mofro? I need to see if I can find that cd.

Yes Sunshine, both Magfest '04 shows are on the archive, SBD source taboot! And yes DT, those symphony shows were awesome. They had played the first symphony show in Jacksonville a week or so before, so a few of the symphony players came out to Live Oak for Mag Fest. They all wore Camouflage shirts, so cool!

i think mofro magic was a name right b4 mofro. IDK

question

What song off the Alma Zuma album is the only one, so far, to make it onto a MOFRO album?

here is what I came up with as all the unanswered questions:

Whats the significance of "Hercules Powder Camp" from the newsletter title?

what does JJ stand for? is it John John or John Jr. ?

How many female band members have there been in Mofro (touring members, not studio)?
Can you name her (or them)?Bea "BBQueen" Gayle - was she the only one?
What instrument did she (or they) play? drums
Bonus: when was she/they with the band? the very begining
Bonus bonus: who replaced them?
Bonus bonus bonus: are there any recordings with her/them? yes

I don't know the answer to this one. But who is "That Boy"? And or his girl? Are they fictional or based on someone JJ knew? I think Jimbo might be our best bet for an answer on this one

I read it and I didn't think it was answered......

you said:
Gotta come bigger that HPC SD. I think just east of HPC there was a camp in Fiftone. I have a buddy Mark, who actually did his dissertation on Turpentine camps from the turn of the century. He was mad about that stuff.

what was the newsletter title? I can be slow at times and the answer may be there and I just don't see it. I guess I don't know what the Hercules Powder Camp is either....
