The Ritz was built in 1917 as the Rivoli Theatre where plays could be seen for 15 cents. It has been thru ups and downs over the years as Ybor City thrived, then fell into urban blight, then resurged, stumbled, and is trying to resurge again.

The building was entered in the Register of Historic Places in 1973 and the National Historic Landmark District in 1989.

From 1992-2006 it was called Masquerade and was a DJ oriented dance club. New owners did extensive refurbishing of it and it re-opened last June. I have not seen a show there nor do I know anyone who has.

It holds 1,100 people (standing). Skipper's holds 700 if everyone holds their stomachs in.

Keep in mind that there will be a yet to be announced co-bill.

I know that JJ ain't all that big on air conditioning (nor is FireFly) but I gotta tell y'all that it's stickier at night in Florida than during the day. Skipper's can be downright ugly sweaty. AND there's always a chance for an early evening thunderstorm and they can't go on stage at Skipper's if there is (much less having to stand in the rain to see 'em) AND Skipper's has a strict midnight curfew so if a show gets weather-delayed it gets cut short.

So I'm kinda looking forward to seeing 'em at the Ritz; someplace new (and air conditioned.) But that's probly just me...

Hey! Cool announcement! I believe I have seen a show (Meshell Ndegeocello) there when it was The Masquerade -- back in my college days. Don't remember too much about it though. Or maybe that was another venue. Ahh, Ybor City when you're 19 years old....

that makes sense, thanks for the clarification Clay. but there just has to be something about enjoying a show outside under those big Oaks........wonder if they will play there in January when the weather is warmer??!?!!!

only because Mr. Perkins said we can make a trip to FL iffin they play at Skippers, so I will have to see it The Ritz will be the same deal........

Last January they played on the 2nd and 3rd I believe and the weather was gorgeous--crisp (for us.)

Year before they played in Feb and it was 29 degrees. That's downright Arctic frigid for us.

Ash...Meshell who? I'm surprised you can remember stuff from when you were 19!

do you think that when the Fall tour is announced it would include if they are to play Skippers in Jan or Feb?

If memory serves me...I saw Rabbit in the Moon & many other DJ's at the Masquerade. Ybor was the place for rave type parties. Won't go into details, but I'm sure some of y'all know what I'm talkin' about.

I'm stoked to FINALLY get to see them in Florida again! Used to be they were in the state 3-4 times a year. Now it seems to be once or twice a year.

Thank Y'all for coming back HOME!

Sunny, no, from what I've been told it's just going to have dates thru mid Dec.

To answer your earlier question...they have to be IN Ft. Lauderdale and on the Jamcruise ship by 3 p.m. on Jan 3. So they'd either have to do Skipper's on Jan 2 or after they get back.

I just gotta think they'll do a S. Florida show somewhere in there tho if not during this Fall run.

Yeah JD great news huh? Hopefully they'll do some others same time. Maybe the Social in Orlando or the House of Rules? I'll run up to Jax or even Tally again if I got to!

clay, don't you know it's on warm beautiful summer nights that you see fireflies? fireflies don't fly around in cool spaces, like ya ever seen any in the winter?

of course nothing beats skippers but it's cool to check out new venues, could ya'll imagine the trouble we all can into in ybor city???

giggles , you are not allowed anywhere the week before the gig. the matter of fact I'm flyin a special protection team from my planet(even if that means i have to blow my cover) to protect you from anything happening to you.

This place has great acoustics to tape! Our tapes will be on fire from this show.

We all should get a hotel in Ybor City, and I will challenge anyone in dominoes, and killing a full bottle of rum.

IT IS ON.

yeah and making it to the ft. lauderdale for jamcruise after a skippers show is a little rough, i did it . after 2 nights for new years and than 2 nights at skipp's with driving home in between to work and THAn to jamcruise, i lost my voice after the first night
so maybe they will play there afterwards, but than again...
i like that they are doin things a little different this year

Drinking I can do, taping I cannot, and it sounds like we're being hustled at dominoes y'all. Great idea about grabbing rooms. There's a Hampton Inn and a Hilton Garden Inn near there. The Hilton is walking distance and the Hampton is a long walk/short ride.

If'n we get commitments for 6-8 rooms we can probly get a discount for a group rate.

FireFly we ain't got no fireflies here no more. Every now and then you'll see just a few in swampy areas but even then it's rare anymore. Ya know "Where did all the fireflies go?" Bring some down in a jar and we'll turn 'em to loose inside the Ritz. How's that?

Welcome Cherry! Love the screen name. We're looking forward to seeing you and Morena again.

We have FireFlies all over up here, they actually happen to be one of the only insects that I like; I guess I'm fascinated by anything that's butt is phosphorescent! :p

A hotel within walking distance sounds fantastic, preferably one that is close enough that I couldn't possibly hurt myself on the walk to the venue!

We ain't had fireflies down this way in 20-30 years.

Meanwhile back at Ybor, I checked and the Hampton is 3 blocks, the Hilton is 6. Whichever's cheaper.

Wow, the Ritz. This is where it all started for me. Saw PHISH there in '93 with less than 200 people... pretty much changed my life and how I viewed music entirely. Before that I listened to rap non stop and thought I wanted to be a DJ :)

Yeah, pretty funny thought huh? Guess I should say I was into rap 'at that time'... Definitely grew up listening to country & classic rock. Jacksonville will do that to ya. But yes, definitely opened my eyes to a whole new scene... Stoked to see they're gonna play there & they're coming back to FL. Can't wait to see where else!

No fireflies in Florida anymore due to all the spraying for mosquitos. When I first moved to Athens, Ga, there weren't any as the city decided to start spraying a few years earlier. Well, a shitload of kids from UGA petitioned the city to stop spraying because it was killing off other insects too....and a year later....my backyard was aglow with fireflies. I have pictures somewhere (need to find them) of the woods behind our apartment where there must have been several hundred of them flying around......looked like a HUGE christmas tree.

That's way cool Hollis. There was a neighborhood we lived in about 5 years ago here in the burbs of Tampa that bordered a cypress wetland and 1 summer (out of 3 we lived there) we saw fireflies a few times. That is my only experience seeing them in Florida my whole life.

Stan you got me on that one. Here I am a native and I didn't know that's how we lost 'em but it sure makes sense.

Florida historical note (which most of you probly already know): The beginning of Florida's population boom began in the 50s with the advancement of 2 things: affordable residential air conditioning; and mass mosquito spraying programs. Otherwise ain't nobody but the hearty would want to live here! Thanks to Stan now we know where oh where all all the fireflies goed.

Giggles, anyone who can hurt themselves before they even get out of their building to go to the airport, and then again when you're on the way to the airport...we ain't gonna let you walk to or from the hotel. We're going to carry you.

SkotDeeJay Master Jam! I can see him now. But how you were you gonna lose the accent? Ain't no white boy with a name like Scott and an accent as strong as JJ's coulda made it. Good move to decide on a different path...

I member as a kid that was one of the things we looked forward to about vacationing in Asheville in the summer: fireflies. It was like the only place I ever saw them til I was probly 16-18 years old. (Oh. Maybe that's cause my mother locked me in a closet during my early teens. Shit. I only tried to burn down the house like twice or sumthing before that. Jeez. She was a little strict.)

Bringing it back around again, if anyone local gets the idea just to run over to Ybor and buy tix at the box ofc and save on the service charges...nice try. That's what I were gonna do but I called them and they said tix to the show are ONLY avail thru LiveCastration. Everybody wants a piece of the pie, the corps keeping getting fatter and who's paying? US!

(Ooops. Got on my high horse there for a minute...)

My Pops has spotted some FFs up in N. FLA recently...up Jackson County way. Maybe the tide is a'turnin' after all. Perhaps an updated FF interlude is in order since some FFs have been spotted.

Good to see you back on the front porch msynan. Good suggestion. There's gonna be a whole lotta people from the board going to the Ybor show. My only concern is that 20 min drive from Skipper's down I-275 and thru Malfunction Junction. But let's see what everybody wants to do! Sorry you can't make the show but we'll see you at HOB.

I'm gonna check with the Ritz--they have a couple of smaller type rooms for private parties. If it's not real expensive that may be an option. We may snag a room at either the Hampton or Hilton nearby; the hotel could be party central. Or any of the nearby bars in walking distance. But I don't wanna rule out Skipper's either...since the guys ain't playing there on this run at least we'd still get to party there.

Suggestions...thoughts...?
