I was planning on hitting the Mofro/Backyard Tire Fire show in Ferndale for the past two weeks. I left work about 5:45 and headed to grab my gear. I had talked to Ron and Beth about meeting up for a bite to eat and then hitting the show. They were on a different time schedule as I wanted to get there at doors, 8:00, to secure my spot on the first rail. So, it was Spicy Chicken with Broccoli and Sno Peas for the ride up. When are they ever gonna finish the I-75 construction so you can get through Detroit!
I arrived at 8:10. Danny is back with Mofro and we had hooked up the night before. To my surprise, almost every table was taken by 8:15, and the rail was all mine! I grabbed the DFC spot and was set in minutes. I went back to the merch table to say hey to Nick, the Backyard Tire Fire Tour Manager. Sure as s$#!, he remembered me from a couple of years ago. We made plans to hook up after their set.
JJ and Mofro took the stage at about 10:45. A straight hour and 45 of swamp music! They had not played the Detroit area since I saw them at the Majik Stick 2 yearsw ago. The place was busting at the seams, sold out! I told Danny that they have outgrown the Magic Bag and onto the next size venu, perhaps Andrews Hall in Detroit.
Nick came and got me at the beginning of the set and I was right behind the stage for the first 4-5 songs. Could hear it very well. The Backyard Tire Fire boys remembered me from Athens! Danny stopped by for a brief visit. Back out front. The set started to gain momentum with the Jookhouse>Lockloosa. At the 4:10 mark of On Fire, JJ starts to tell the story of how his Dad was watching a young lady that is what the song is based upon. JJ makes reference to my rig when he says thank God my Dad does not go on the internet to find these shows. A very funny moment! I always enjoy a Six Ways From Sunday! Ho Cake was very entertaining as usual. My favorite might have been saved for the end, Got My Mojo Working! What a smoking version.
Great hanging with Ron and Beth, Andrew (where's the photos?) and his wife Jill, Amanda, Bill, Rick and his fiancee, Jason, Ben, Nicholas, and of course the BYTF gang and Danny!
The trip would not be complete without a quick stop at the Telway Hamburger Joint at 11 Mile and John R for a 4 pack of Sliders!
Damn zman. What a way to introduce yourself to the board. Thanks for a great rundown of the show--very nice. Welcome aboard! ---------- MofroFan1

---------- "All I can say is that there's a sweetness here, a Southern sweetness, that makes sweet music. . . . If I had to tell somebody who had never been to the South, who had never heard of soul music, what it was, I'd just have to tell him that it's music from the heart, from the pulse, from the innermost feeling. That's my soul; that's how I sing. And that's the South."
^^^z-man, may you get back what you passed on. If this is true, you are going to be a weathly person. You have been feeding me music for years. Thank you.
