A very quick look online has multiple variations of chord progressions for this tune. And I'm not talking differend keys - I'm talking completely different progressions..

I suppose I'll sit down with JJ's version this weekend and pick it out, but if any of you have scoop it'd be 'preciated.

Hey tox,

JJ plays it the same as Van Morrison, just in a different key. The only thing in terms of being different is his intro/solo is different then Van's not only in key, but just all together. It is played within the pentatonic scale, so easy to figure out.

Here is the chord progression:

G - Bm - C - G

G - Bm - C - D

G - Bm - C - G

G - Bm - C - G

That's it, all the way through. Just play along with the track and you will get the timing. Also, it won't take long to figure out the way his strums when you play along as well, they are pretty simple.

The intro is in pentatonic scale of G.

Van's version is played in Bb if I recall. But it's the same chord progression - Bb - Dm - Eb - Bb, I think?

Let me know how it turns out for ya.

Thanks DEET.
I'm going to fart around with that over the holiday, with some good winter beer (gotta take advantage of the projected cool weather in FL), and let it roll.

No problem Brett, anytime, let me know how it works for you. It sounds like JJ did the same thing with the new way he plays King Hummingbird, just dropped the capo and played it in a different key. Although, I guess you could find out for sure by asking JJ directly. I wish I could sit down with him sometime and mess around on the guitar along side him. Any word on the fishing auction? I take it someone won it, they find a time and place to go or still in the works?

Someone from Texas won the bid. We have not settled on a time and place yet, but all are looking forward.

If I get the chance I'll BS with him about the music. I hate to bug him with that stuff, tho, especially that weekend when it's on someone else's dime.

One day in my living room he showed me how he plays the riff for "that girl." I showed him the way I was doing it, and he said, "that's cool, too." Of course, he probably should have said, "holy shit, that sucks!" but that's who he is.

Very cool, although I am jealous of the winner, very cool. I hear you on not bugging JJ about it that weekend, but who knows, maybe the winner will bring it up for you? j/k. And of course you are dead on about JJ's nature, but I doubt you played it wrong or as bad as you think you did. If you did, I think JJ would have told you as such, but in a manner as to not degrade or make you feel bad. Of anyone, he understands that music is interpreted in different ways, which makes it so versatile and unique, that it can be played a myriad of different ways. Even if you showed him how you played a song of his that was different, I don't see him telling you to not play it that way or that it was the wrong thing to do. He'd show you how he plays it, or first intended it to be played, but probably enjoy hearing it from a different point of view. I imagine that's what has lead him to change up songs like Brighter Days or King Hummingbird. It just comes out sometimes. You don't force it, it just happens.
