DREAM SETLIST CONTEST

We've danced all around this one y'all, so it's time we do it. Especially considering Danny's (MOFROTM) recent comments about the setlists getting "nutty" in Jan and Feb (we can only hope they do!) and the responses to dirtcracker’s post about favorite songs you’d like to hear.

What would your Mofro "Dream Setlist" have on it?

DON'T start putting it all down yet!! I wanna find out how everybody wants to do this...get a consensus.

And I'm thinking rather than having them posted here on the board, I'll get y'all that are entering to email me your list. Then at the end of the period (like 30 days), I would put them all up on a page along with a poll (similar to the photo contest poll page that went up this week.) That way everyone's is a mystery to one another (and to everyone else) until polling begins. Everyone would vote for their favorite. There would be one winner. I'll come up with some good stuff. Maybe not quite as elaborate as the photo contest, but good stuff nonetheless. There's also the potential for a really, really grand prize (more in a moment.)

Just how "real" do we keep it? Well...I'd like to approach JJ about playing the setlist at the winner’s "home club" when they come there again. For example, if my setlist won (and NO, I can’t enter my own contest, dammit) were to win, my "home" club is Skipper's so next time they come to play at Skipper's they would play my setlist.

Now that's reaching for the stars guys. I have no idea if they'd do this, or even if they can. They have a record to promote, they have to keep all the people and the venue happy at a show. And there could be a hundred reasons they can't do it. But I figure the worst thing that can happen is that they say no they can't do that and don't ask again. And that's cool by me. It’s a wacky idea. But wacky enough that maybe they’d want to get behind it. Never know.

If we kept the setlist "real," then it might help. By real I mean it has to include several Orange Blossoms songs. And it can't be all covers. And it would have to include at least of couple of the usual crowd-pleasers: Lochloosa, Junior, Ho Cake. And it would need to be like 20 songs max.

OR we could just go nuts and you can do the setlist however you want. In this case though I think it's more like a fantasy setlist whereas the above is a dream setlist. I would define fantasy setlist as being the one they'd play if they were coming to your house. (Now THAT'S a fantasy!) Like you're gonna have 100 of your closest friends over and you get to provide the band with the setlist.

So, I guess we could sum that all up as dream vs. fantasy.

Keep in mind though that we do need to have a beginning and an end, and a time period to vote. And if y'all overrule me and want to post them as you go along instead of sending to me and waiting to have them all go up at once, then so be it.

Keep in mind too that there are about 4,500 people that hit the site every month (plus about 1,100 return visitors--that's us boardies), so there's lots of people to cast votes.

Come on an jump in and tell me y'all's thoughts, K?

Clay, I love your idea. I'll play by any rules.

So, let's go back to talkin' about the band playing at my house! How much money do I need to save up? Oh that would be a great graduation party in May!! :-)

the Stones did this back on their last tour. people submitted dream setlists and then they randomly drew them and flew that person to the show (i think) and played the setlist they had submitted.

i REALLY, i mean REALLY, like this idea Clay.

Thanks y'all. THE STONES DID THIS? Damn. I thought it was all my idea. It came to me in either a dream or a drug induced stupor. I don't remember.

JD, was that really a battle cry of the CG tour? That's awesome.

I always loved J. Walsh for "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get". Huh?

Okay there JohnDude slow down!! You're on a roll tonight. I pulled your setlist. See above, read the 3rd paragraph--the one that starts with DON'T.

This is gonna be a contest; not for funsies. Y'all get to vote and there's gonna be a winner.

Ain't nobody s'posed to post setlists yet until we all agree on how it's all gonna kind of work. I ain't going to the time and expense of having a contest if'n we don't have some sort of rules.

And we all gotta decide if we put them up as we go along, or all at one time at the end of like 30 days (at which time the voting will start.)

There's only about 150 of us on the board but we also got several hundred lurkers, plus about 175 new people discovering the site every day. So, who knows, there's going to be maybe anywhere from 25 to 100 setlist submittals. But there will be well over 1,000 votes cast (if I had to guess.)

Pull them reins back their John!! Gots to let some others chime in firstus.

Yeah I think 20 is a good number. Seems to be an avg of what they normally do.

Don't worry there JD bout moving so fast. It be partly my fault for writing a mini-novella up there that's the length of somewhere between "Green Eggs & Ham" and "War and Peace." Anyone who can remain awake all the way through my 2 posts up there must be on a caffeine buzz (or stronger!)

The dream setlist contest is a wonderful IDEA:) This concept will definitely keep us restless natives busy while we draft and re-draft our lists until we hit upon our perceived perfection:) Maybe you could break the contest out into two portions, "The Realistic Dream Setlist" & "The Fantasy Dream Setlist". That way we could submit the setlist more likely to actually be played and also our HOLY GRAIL of setlists.

So I have gathered that the consensus so far is for a 20 song set list with a maximum of 2 covers? How many Orange Blossom songs should be included, around 7?

:::busily wearing my pencil to a nub and littering my floor with a growing mountain of crumpled up "rejected" setlists:::

i also like the idea of keeping them secret. setting a deadline to have them in, then putting them up on the site for a vote. posting them here and there as people submit them would be considered "cheating" in some cases.

ok Clay -

whats the deal with this? still waiting for some people to chime in?

when would the "promotion tour" for OB be officially over? just asking because pretty sure whenever they make it back to VA they won't be playing as many songs from that album.

ps. look for some texts tomorrow night from the Greenville show, if i have service of course.

Shit...I've been waiting on you to ask, dirt. I just knew you would! Obviously you like the idea. As do I and many others, so it's a go but I just haven't had time to organize it. Part of the problem is that I've been spending a lot more time of late trying to stay ahead of the the bill collectors. The other is that I don't really want to start anything new of any magnitude during the holidays.

I'm sure you've noticed that posts are a bit slow. Site viewers are off for the month, which is not surprising. We offer entertainment and right now people's attentions are diverted.

Since there's going to be a grand prize to the "best" setlist I also need to think that thru. And it has to be set up where lurkers can participate as easily as board members. So that precludes the setlists from being posted, but then they have to be emailed to me and I'm thinking that we're actually going to have 2 contests, so I don't want all that happening during the holidays and I'm out of town and shit.

First of the year...we'll get er going.
